Dean Smith will battle on after being berated by Norwich City fans in a 2-0 Championship defeat to Blackburn.

Smith had to run the gauntlet on a desperate night at Carrow Road that made it one win from the last seven in front of the club’s own fan base.

The City chief’s methods and style of play came in for heavy criticism during and after a loss to Rovers.

“Not very nice. I didn’t enjoy it at all,” he said. “Fans have opinions. I have never hid away from that and I never would do. But as I have always said, if we play crap come at me after the game. By all means.

"To do it during the game is tough, because I felt that showed on the players as well. “There is a narrative that has been set about the style of play and it being poor. Despite being in the top two in this league for shots on goal and in the top three for possession. I can’t change that. That is opinions at the moment. Those stats are there for all to see.

“We have plenty of players who have played in two title winning teams here who were getting stick here as well. I thought that was a little bit uncalled for.

"When we give a really poor goal away like the first one we want people to get behind us and have that togetherness to get back in the game. Unfortunately it wasn’t there.”

Smith batted away questions on his own future, or the prospect of any talks with sporting director Stuart Webber regarding his position, as he looks to bounce back at Luton on Boxing Day.

“I have never been in control of that aspect at any football club I have been at. I always said that. I don’t control if I am at a football club or not,” he said. “All I do is control the players in terms of getting ready for the next game.

"I think I said to you from the first day I came in I have never worried about any position I have had at a football club because you are not in control of that.

"(Would you expect discussions with Webber on your job?) I don’t believe so. If Stu wants to speak about my position he will do. I am not going to go looking for Stu and asking, ‘Is my position under threat?’.

"We have to turn it around. We are away from home in the next game at Luton and hopefully we can put in a performance and a result. It does feel like at the moment we have to probably go two or three up at Carrow Road to satisfy some.

"We didn’t expect the reaction from the fans to be as vociferous as it was but everyone has an opinion on football.”
