Tim Krul should not be a scapegoat for Norwich City’s Burnley mauling, insists David Wagner.

The Canaries' head coach defended his keeper after an early gaffe set the Clarets on the way to a 3-0 Championship cruise at Carrow Road.

Krul’s goal kick went straight to Anass Zaroury inside his own penalty box, who composed himself to whip a strike past Krul and Grant Hanley on the line.

Wagner launched a bullish post-match defence for those who question whether the Dutchman is comfortable playing out from the back.

“I think it's an unfair question. He is an experienced pro. A Dutch international and if you know Dutch guys normally they want to play out from the back,” said Wagner. “They don't hit the ball long.

"So I think it's a very unfair question, in this situation, to be fair. If we speak about playing out from the back, first of all, there are different scenarios. If it's a goal kick and we say to play out from the back that is something different than using the keeper as an outfield player in general play.

"Goal kick, this was a totally easy situation. You have two options - you kick it long and go for second balls or you play. We like to play, if possible, in this situation.

“At this moment it was not possible. So it was more about decision making rather than is he comfortable enough with his feet to do it? For us we only have to make it better, not to think about do we change everything because of one mistake.

"I raised my hand for this mistake, no problem with it. We like to play football out of the back if it's on. In this situation, it wasn't, so it was more about the decision rather than does he has the capability of passing the ball.”

Wagner made it clear there will be an honest debrief between coaches and players after an error-strewn Carrow Road setback.

"For me always as a manager if this makes sense there are defeats and there are other defeats," he said. "By that I mean you can lose and it is very easy to explain or analyse what went wrong. I will do this because I'm the manager and I have to finger point everything we made wrong and right.

"It is the same for a player if it is so obvious what I have done wrong in this situation.

"We can discuss about individuals who didn't mark their man or who didn't mark their space in the set pieces. If this is so clear and obvious this is not a technical problem or a tactical mistake, this is only individuals.

"Unfortunately individuals make mistakes. Most of us have made mistakes. I am just as annoyed about the other two goals as the first one we conceded."

Wagner opted to recall Krul for his first Championship win at Preston in favour of Angus Gunn. Gunn was ruled out against Burnley with a hip issue, but after an injection is targeting a return to training ahead of the trip to Bristol City.

“It looked quite well after the injection,” said Wagner. “I've spoken with him before this game and it looks like that he can come back and train at the end of the next week, maybe even the middle of next week.”
