David Wagner is challenging Onel Hernandez to continue his improvement at Norwich City.

The Cuban winger was a standout performer in City's 3-1 victory over Hull, recording two assists and causing havoc with his pace, power and trickery throughout.

Often, Hernandez has been cast in the role of impact substitute tasked with changing matches off the bench. Former first-team coach Liam Bramley described him as a finisher during his time at the club working alongside Dean Smith.

Wagner has wiped the slate clean since his arrival and has started Hernandez in four of the five Championship matches that he has overseen.

The winger is out of contract come the summer but made little secret of his desire to extend his stay at Norwich when asked following their 4-2 victory over Coventry last month.

Hernandez was named as man of the match inside Carrow Road, but Wagner believes he can continue to improve the 30-year-old.

"To be fair to him, I think most of the games that we have played together, he has shown a decent performance," Wagner said.

"He was there with two assists which is important. I still see a lot of space for improvement. In the first half, for example from my view, there were too many situations where he switched off defensively, but I am here to help and support him. We will work on it.

"Fitness-wise, we have to make sure he can produce this level week in and week out from the first to the final whistle.

"This is my job to make sure that the players improve. We have work to do with him but he played very well like the rest of the team."

Norwich's victory over Hull was their first at Carrow Road since October and Wagner felt it was their best since his arrival at the club.

"I just heard in the radio interview that it was October since the last win here," Wagner said. "It feels great. For me as a manager, it feels even better because we deserved this win and we played to our strengths and to our identity.

"Defensively we looked very sharp, very greedy and were aggressive. We played on the front foot and gave no clear-cut chances away. We weren't affected by the goal we conceded. Offensively we had a lot of box entries and played very well.

"I think it was the best performance that we have shown this season."
