Spud Thornhill: Feeling the Valentine's love at a Norwich City game

I left Amelia at home after her visit from Jack Valentine, leaving gifts to all the good children, for a romantic evening with my wife Hayleigh... spending the night at Carrow Road with 26,000 others. Where else?

Despite only one home win in 11 and notwithstanding the way modern football has tried to kill my love for the game at times, I didn’t want to be anywhere else than Carrow Road.

Hearing the news on Monday of more shares being available and the possibility of more cash injection - we don’t officially know, but possibly from Mike Attanasio - sounds very promising.

For many years, Delia Smith, Michael Wynn Jones and rest of the board have been questioned, unfairly in my opinion, far too many times and told to sell up. They have always said they would listen only to genuine people with genuine interest in our beloved club.

Ever since May, I, like many others, have looked into Attanasio and the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team, which he owns. From his interviews and what I’ve read about him and the Brewers, it appears he has the same values as our board.

You can see the board have kept to their word, protecting our football club, which they should be applauded for and never forgotten.

The warm feeling I normally get when I walk down Carrow Road was even warmer on Tuesday. Despite defeats in our two previous games, I knew our form had to change at some point. I was feeling very confident, something I hadn’t felt for very long time.

I must admit when Hull scored, quite unlike me, I did think 'here we go again'. Fortunately we did strike back very quickly and took control of the game and went on to win - shame it was not by an even bigger margin.

There are many things I’ve learnt from watching Norwich City over the years and one of them is to never over-judge a new player. Give them time and you might get a player who will go down in history here.

For example, Iwan Roberts and Mario Vrancic. I think even they would admit they struggled in their first seasons here, but then they just grew and grew as players and are known very much as proper legends of the club.

And that is why I’ll reserve my judgment on players like Gabriel Sara at times this season. Watching him recently, especially at Coventry and Tuesday against Hull, he’s definitely showing why we paid so much for him and listening to him after the game he sounds like he’s prospering very well under David Wagner.

Another player who is really benefiting from Wagner is Onel Hernandez. I hope he will be rewarded with a new contact because he’s another player who looks like he will thrive under Wagner.

Watching the highlights back, not only was it great seeing the goals but hearing the atmosphere and singing before the second goal. Our support was appreciated by the team and Wagner after the game. Togetherness is getting better game by game.

Being only two points off the play-off, we still have a lot to play for. It just says so much about this league - and why what happened before Wagner arrived is frustrating.

There is nothing we can do about it now but try and look forward.

Whatever happens in the near future with Wagner, Attanasio, the players and anyone else with the club,  I am sure there will be few tiffs on the way, but I am sure the love affair will bring the magic back at Carrow Road. Just like Jack Valentine did on Tuesday for so many Norfolk children.
