David Wagner hailed the complete performance that powered Norwich City back into the Championship play-off picture in a stirring 3-2 comeback at Millwall.

The Canaries notched twice from two clever short corner routines, before Gabby Sara’s stunning left-footed smack sealed a statement win in front of 3,000 travelling fans.

Norwich replaced the Lions in the top six after inflicting a first defeat on their promotion rivals since September 14.

“It's a massive win. For sure it is a big win,” said Wagner. “I didn’t know they hadn’t lost in the league at home since September. Psychologically another important win for us and in the manner we achieved it away against a good side who can always put pressure on you.

"I think we started not on our best. The occasion, the atmosphere was very, very intense. We conceded an avoidable goal, one we worked on the whole week in terms of how we defend the situation. Mistakes happened, but they are human, and we gave away a very easy goal but how we reacted was great.

"We played good football, and in difficult circumstances we created good opportunities and scored wonderful goals. Then how we brought it over the line with this commitment, this attitude, the fighting spirit and togetherness was great.”

Onel Hernandez raced to celebrate with first team coach Andrew Hughes after a key role in City’s second goal from a corner, while the Canaries' opening goalscorer Jacob Sorensen credited Hughes for the set piece sorcery.

The club’s set piece coach, Allan Russell, was a notable absentee from Wagner’s coaching team, but the German opted not to comment when questioned after the game.

“Nothing I’d like to speak about at the moment,” he said. “Yes he was involved (Hughes) and it's nice, as I said, when you have ideas, but it's important that the players make the right decisions in the right moment. They've done it and we worked together as a group. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t.

“Millwall have a certain height to their team and it is something we said could we explore another way.

"It's always important to have good ideas but then it's about the execution from the guys to make it happen at the right moment, with the right timing. We've seen how important set pieces are, because they scored off a set piece as well.”
