James Maddison is set to start in an England shirt for the first time this evening - and that's good news for Norwich City.

The Canaries inserted a clause in the midfielder's move to Leicester City in 2018, meaning they're due significant windfall when he starts in a competitive international game for the first time.

Maddison was included in England's World Cup squad for the trip to Qatar late last year, but didn't feature as the Three Lions were beaten by France in the quarter-finals.

He did make his England debut in a 7-0 thrashing of Montenegro in Euro 2020 qualifying, but only as a substitute.

The 26-year-old is now set to start for the first time nearly four years later, as England face Ukraine in Euro 2024 qualifying at Wembley.

Maddison was signed by Norwich in January 2016 before being loaned back to Coventry City as part of the deal and moving to Norfolk in the following summer.

He then spent the majority of his first full season on loan in Scotland with Aberdeen, returning to Carrow Road and making his league debut for Norwich in April 2017's win over Preston North End, in which he scored.

He then starred during Daniel Farke's first season, scoring 15 goals in 49 appearances before being sold to the Foxes for around £20million.

His fifth season in blue has been a successful one individually. Despite Leicester's struggles as a team he's scored nine goals and registered six assists in 20 Premier League games this term, leading to consecutive call-ups from Gareth Southgate.

The reception of the add-on comes at a good time for Norwich, who could face a fire sale if they fail to achieve promotion this season.

Finance director Anthony Richens admitted player trading would be required in that case, telling official club channels: "The worst case scenario always doesn’t include promotion.

"In those scenarios, an element of player trading would be needed and that would be based on the cash deficit in that period."
