The Gunn family couldn’t hold back tears as Norwich City goalkeeper Angus made his Scotland debut, according to dad and former Canary Bryan.

The 27-year-old played for the Tartan Army for the first time since officially switching allegiances in their 3-0 win over Cyprus on Saturday, and it was an emotional occasion for Bryan, who spent 12 years at Carrow Road, and his family.

“When we were singing ‘Flower of Scotland’, Angus’ fiancée Phoebe, who’s a young English lady, was crying,” he said. “It showed me what it meant to the family.

“My mum was there and my brother, nieces and nephews and second cousins. We had a great day, and it was all down to Angus and his ability to get picked for the Scotland team.

“One of my colleagues put up a picture of me in my Norwich and Scotland kits and the same with Angus. It’s the sort of thing you don’t think deeply about, but when you see it and someone else is saying it, it makes it a bit more special.

“To see that and know that other people are thinking about it, it does give you a sense of pride at what you’ve done in your own career, and hopefully what’s going to happen in Angus’ career as well.”

Steve Clarke’s side face Spain in another Euro 2024 qualifier this evening, and Angus will hope to retain his starting berth.

Bryan continued: “This is his opportunity now to make his case for the number one jersey. Obviously there’s Zander Clark and Liam Kelly, other goalkeepers in the squad.

“I’m sure there will still be question marks out there from a few doubters about whether it was the right thing that Angus got the shout as number one.

“But it’s all about opinions, and the most important opinion is Steve Clarke’s, and he wanted Angus to be number one, and that’s all we can work from.

“Hopefully now he does enough before the game to take on the mighty Spain!”
