April 1 is always a day that makes me smile to myself - I’m sure at some time this morning I’ll hear something or read something which will be so bizarre that years ago I would’ve been gullible enough to believe.

It may have taken a few years but I’m a little bit quicker at not falling for April Fools. My favourite is Norwich City related and was way back in 1992.

It was reported that then local DJ (and Ipswich Town fan) Rob Chandler was set to sign for Norwich City after he had recently participated in a charity event with our own Bryan Gunn. They had swapped jobs for the day. Whilst Gunny was presenting the breakfast show on Radio Broadland, Chandler spent a day training at Norwich City as a goalkeeper.

Oddly enough, Gunny was out with a back injury sustained against today’s opponents, Sheffield United, a few months earlier. There was even talk about Chandler challenging keeper Mark Walton for a place in the FA Cup semi-final, which was only four days away.

It was crazy to think Town fan Chandler was going to go from presenting Radio Broadland earlier in the week to trying to help Norwich City to Wembley.

I was at college telling people the big breaking news, only to be told I'd better check the date. It was April Fool's Day. Oh boy, did I feel silly?

Gunny has had a bit of history against Sheffield United. From coming off injured against them to getting sent off at Bramall Lane in September 1995 after having some choice words with the match referee to one of the most incredible penalty area scrambles during an FA Cup tie at Carrow Road in January 1997.

I sat behind the goal that day and if I close my eyes now I can still see the mad incident, which lasted about 10-15 seconds. Sheffield United hit the woodwork three times, including a superb slice from defender John Polston onto the bar, a superb point blank save from Gunny to the ball landing into Gunny’s hands. And I am sure Gunny will say it was all under control.

Talking of Gunny, has there been a family more proud than the Gunn family in the last couple of weeks? Following on from Angus Gunn’s one-man show two weeks ago at Stoke to being called up to the Scotland national team.

I think we can all agree he throughly deserved the call-up. I’m sure it’s not easy for Angus to follow in his dad's footsteps, but I’m also sure there is not one Canary who was not buzzing for him.

And what a fantastic start to his international career. Two clean sheets is great but to say it includes one against Spain is phenomenal.

Ever since he first came here on loan and then when we signed him permanently, he has been first class.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was a leading candidate to win the Barry Butler Memorial Player of Season award, alongside Gabriel Sara.

I’m sure there will be some changes in the summer if we don’t go up, but one thing for sure, we do not need to get a number one just yet. I just wished Angus had a ritual before the game like his father did by nearly heading the crossbar - it's one of many great memories I have of watching his dad for so many years, especially in my younger and very keen days as a Norwich fan.

I just wonder if another certain morning radio presenter, commentator for Norwich City and fellow columnist Chris Goreham has ever played in goal and will be announcing this morning he’s having a career move and putting on the gloves.

If he is I’ll be better prepared...
