Norwich City: Jackie McNamara's praise for Angus Gunn

The Norwich City shot-stopper impressed during his first camp with Steve Clarke's side - keeping two clean sheets against Cyprus and in a shock victory over 2010 World Champions Spain. 

After experienced goalkeeper Craig Gordon suffered a serious injury in December, Clarke was forced to fast-track a search for a new, long-term number one and immediately held talks with Gunn about switching his allegiance from England to Scotland. 

Gunn decided this was the right moment in his career to try and establish himself on the international stage after winning the race to be Norwich's number one and a prolonged run of matches in the Championship. 

Clarke opted to pick Gunn ahead of Hearts keeper Zander Clark and Motherwell's Liam Kelly in recent European Championship internationals.

The 27-year-old described his first camp as a 'dream' and remains determined to nail down his position in the months and years ahead. 

McNamara, who made 33 appearances for Scotland between 1996 and 2005, has backed the City goalkeeper to make the position his own in the future. 

“His performances have been excellent – so the possibility is definitely there," McNamara said, speaking alongside former Scotland boss Craig Levein at the launch of the eScottish Football Cup 2023 at Hampden Park on Wednesday.

“I don’t know if that last camp was enough for Steve to come out and say Angus is his No.1 goalkeeper, but the prospect [of Gunn becoming No.1] is real.

“I think we have got the best squad of players we have had for a long, long time.

“The team is fairly young, they are growing together and Steve has got a real connection with them.

“That is apparent by the improvement that we have seen in the team.

“I wasn’t confident but I was very hopeful that we could beat Spain, and that proved to be the case.

“It wasn’t a fluke, it was a fairly solid display and it gets us off to a wonderful start in this campaign.”
