Norwich City hold an interest in signing out of contract Burnley striker Ashley Barnes this summer.

Barnes, 33, is departing Championship title-winners Burnley after a nine-year association with the club upon the expiry of his current contract.

We understand that Norwich are among the clubs interested in signing the experienced frontman as part of their summer overhaul.

Barnes has played 30 Championship games for Vincent Kompany’s side this season, scoring six goals and recording three assists in the side that romped to the Championship title this season.

David Wagner revealed at his pre-Blackpool press conference that Norwich had begun showing players around their Colney training base ahead of what is anticipated to be a busy summer of player trading.

It’s understood Barnes and his representatives were one of those given a tour with a view to becoming a permanent addition of Wagner’s refreshed squad next seasons.

The German is seeking players who provide character and don’t wilt in the face of adversity, he revealed at his pre-match press conference on Friday.

Barnes fits the bill as well as adding an injection of know how into City’s striker stable. Adam Idah, 22, and Josh Sargent, 23, are the other options with Teemu Pukki to leave the club this summer.

Speaking about Norwich's acceleration of their transfer plans, Wagner said: “I never had the feeling in these past four months when I was here we had too many to pick from.

“We have made the first decisions. For sure, they are not the last ones. I am very happy with what we already have in our head and obviously we had some first conversations, had some players here, and showed them the training ground in the last week."
