Jonathan Tomkinson’s injury blow will not force David Wagner into the market to bolster Norwich City’s centre back stocks.

The American youngster is set for ’10 to 12’ weeks on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury in the closing stages of the recent friendly draw against FC Kaiserlautern.

City’s medical team are still assessing whether Tomkinson will require surgery, but Wagner wants to take a look at fellow development centre back Jaden Warner on the upcoming Austrian tour.

Grant Hanley is not expected to return for months from an Achilles injury while Andrew Omobamidele is touted with a summer exit.

But Wagner insists his solution is not in the transfer market, with the Championship kick-off at Hull City just over a fortnight away.

“I don't think so. I like to see Jaden Warner a bit further now,” said Wagner, speaking after the midweek trip to face AZ Alkmaar. “He was with us (in Holland) and he will go to Austria as well. This is his chance to show his capability.

"We've seen him a few times in the last weeks and months. But I really like to give him the chance to maybe be part of those four fit centre backs for the beginning of the season. And nothing is decided yet but I think first of all, we should look at our academy products.

“It is not yet clear if he (Tomkinson) needs surgery or not. But the timeframe is quite clear. So it will take 10 to 12 weeks till he is back so unfortunately this is another injury setback we have conceded in this pre-season.”

The Pink Un:

Jacob Sorensen stepped in for another emergency central defensive shift towards the end of last season, but the Dane was absent against AZ Alkmaar. Gabby Sara also stayed in England to work on his fitness after a summer appendix operation.

“There was a decision to make: do we give him 15 minutes or two proper training sessions and we decided that we will give him two proper training sessions,” said Wagner, with the duo in the travelling party heading to Austria on Friday.

“He has been in training since Germany but we feel it is better for him to build up a workload in training rather than 15 minutes in a game at this stage.

"If everything goes to plan he will play against Toulouse. Then he will continue his programme as a part of the squad.

“Lunghi has some groin problems, no big issues, but we wanted to rest him and he’ll be back in training before we go to Austria.”

Wagner sanctioned a season-long loan move to Portsmouth for attacker Abu Kamara ahead of the Alkmaar test.

“He would get a spot in the squad, without a shadow of a doubt, because he's a talent but I don't know how much game time he will get,” he said. “And I think for him the most important thing is now to get proper senior football.

“For me, it was very important that we had a recall clause in this loan contract as well, which we agreed with Portsmouth. This was important to me.

"So I wish him the very best and that he performs on the level which I hope he can do. Then they have a very good player and this is why we decided to give him a loan.”
