One of Norwich's most popular gyms has been re-launched by two former Norwich City players.

Greens gym, in Barrack Street, was bought by Nuffield Health in January and was re-launched with the help of former Canaries Craig Fleming and Darren Eadie on Saturday morning.

Now named Nuffield Health Fitness and Wellbeing Centre Norwich, general manager Grant Ewens made a speech to gathered staff and gym members ahead of Fleming and Eadie cutting a ribbon to begin the gym's new lease of life.

As part of the day of celebration there were taster exercise classes on offer, as well as health advice, a six-month free membership competition and joining offers.

Mr Fleming, 40, is a member of the gym himself and director of football at Lowestoft Town Football Club. He said: 'I think retiring as a footballer has changed a lot. Football changed during our era. It used to be more about technique but as the years went by it became more about fitness being important and we became athletes.

'When you think of the characters through the years, the likes of Micky Quinn and Jan Molby, who were tremendous footballers, but today it is more about fitness.

'I cycle a lot to keep in shape. I've been interested in cycling ever since Steen Nedergaard got me into the Tour de France when he was at Norwich.'

Mr Eadie, 37, is also a member at the gym. He added: 'You don't really get players retiring and buying pubs or wine bars any more, a lot of players move into the health and fitness industry.

'A lot of the former Norwich footballers are members of the gym here, like me, Flem and Iwan (Roberts). It's all about keeping your fitness up and from my point of view, doing bits of TV work and the like, I'd rather be looking in good shape than having people say 'he's let himself go a bit', so maybe a little bit of vanity!'
