Lowestoft right-back Callum White praised the resilience of the Trawlerboys after they dug in to claim their first league win of the season.

A superb first half strike from Jake Reed was enough to secure the win against Worthing, with Lowestoft also missing a penalty in the opening period.

But it was the ability of the home side to defend their lead that most impressed White - who signed in the summer after previously playing for Banbury United.

'The main thing was to get the three points and although in the second half we didn't really play that well - we got through it and we are up and running,' he said.

'Every team is going to have their chances at the end if they are going for it but we managed to hold on - sometimes you have to win ugly - we dug in and defended our box well.'

Manager Ady Gallagher made one enforced change to the team that narrowly lost out to title favourites Billericay Town in their last game.

With Shaun Bammant injured, on-loan Ipswich Town striker Declan Daniels was brought into the starting XI.

It was all to play for at the Amber Dew Events Stadium at the start of play – with both teams losing their first two matches in the league.

Worthing, who began the game at the bottom of the division, started on the front foot with James Fraser shooting just over.

The Trawlerboys had a golden chance to take the lead on 19 minutes from the penalty spot.

Travis Cole, up for a free-kick, was brought down just inside the area by Fraser and, with no hesitation, referee George Laflin pointed to the spot.

Daniels stepped up, but his shot cannoned off the post and out for a goal-kick.

Daniels had another clear chance on 22 minutes, shooting straight at Covolan.

The chances kept coming for Gallagher's side - Rossi Jarvis' sublime through ball was flicked goalwards by Reed, but the ball went narrowly wide of the post.

Daniels had another opportunity on the half-hour mark, but his header goalwards drifted wide.

As the game edged towards half-time, Lowestoft finally made their pressure pay.

After visiting winger Tony Nwachukwu was booked for a challenge on Barker, the resulting free-kick was whipped into the box by Jacek Zielonka on 41 minutes.

The ball was knocked back by Jarvis to Reed, who expertly swivelled to shoot past Covolan for 1-0 and his second goal in as many games.

Worthing made two changes at half time, with Pope and Denyer-Schneider replacing Nwachukwu and Folkes as the West Sussex side looked for a way back into the game.

And it was Denyer-Schneider who had the first chance of the second half - but his shot was comfortably held by Ben Dudzinski.

On 75 minutes, and as the rain began to fall once more, Zielonka burst through - only to be denied by a great save from Covolan in the Worthing goal.

But at 1-0, the visiting side still had a chance to avoid a third consecutive defeat.

They came within inches of an equaliser on 80 minutes as Sam Rents unleashed a shot from 25 yards, but it cannoned back off the crossbar as Lowestoft held on for the win.

The victory prompted celebrations among the home players and fans, with White keen to build the momentum ahead of a busy schedule.

'We have got our first win now - we need a good performance at Harlow and I am sure the result will take care of itself and then it's the big one against Leiston.

'We will take every game as it comes and hopefully we can get another three points at the weekend to set us up for the Bank Holiday Monday game.'
