His epic football career saw him turn out more than 1,100 times for his club, in three decades, never once picking up a booking or - perhaps more amazingly - an injury.
Now a campaign is under way to see former King's Lynn FC footballer Mick Wright, who holds a British record for the number of appearances, given the freedom of West Norfolk.
Mr Wright, 73, was primarily a wing half but played for the team in every position - including in goal - during his career. He also twice scored the winning goal during the team's celebrated FA Cup run of 1961-62.
The campaign to bring him greater recognition is being orchestrated by officials at the club - now known as King's Lynn Town FC.
Keith Rudd, club president, and Rob Back, reserve team manager, have started an online petition, to present to West Norfolk Council for consideration.
The freedom of the borough is rarely awarded, but Mr Rudd said his friend and former mentor would be a worthy recipient.
He said: 'I've always felt he should have been recognised, but the petition was triggered at a west Norfolk awards ceremony. People have done less than him and been recognised. He should have been given an award. He's a superb man and he would be so chuffed to get it.
'I've known him since I was 18 when I joined the club. He could have played in a higher league, and had the chance to play for Bury, but turned it down, as he was settled in Lynn.
'He was a good mentor for me as a youngster. He was 50 when he stopped playing, was never booked or injured. What an image that is for young players to look up to.'
Mr Back added: 'He's an inspiration and richly deserves the freedom of the borough. There were no histrionics with Mick.'
Mr Wright, who lives in Queensway in Lynn, said it would be a 'big honour' to be given the freedom of the borough, but added: 'I'm quite embarrassed, though. I enjoyed every minute of my career, and I even enjoyed playing when we lost.'
West Norfolk Council leader Nick Daubney said: 'The council does have a procedure we follow when considering granting the freedom of the borough, and we would be happy to share this with anyone who wishes to make a nomination'.
