Belgian Ritchie De Laet, who operates primarily as a central defender but is equally comfortable at left-back, signed for Manchester United in January 2009 after joining from Stoke City.

Prior to his arrival at Old Trafford, the Belgian had spent 18 months with Stoke, but never actually made an appearance for the Potters following a £100,000 move from Royal Antwerp in January 2007.

De Laet spent the second half of the 2010/11 season on loan at Portsmouth where his defensive discipline and lightning pace marked him out as one of the outstanding full-backs in the Championship.
