He began his career with Scottish side Hibernian and made his debut in a 1-0 win over St Johnstone on May 12, 2002.

The 6ft, 1in Whittaker went on to make more than 190 appearances for Hibs after establishing himself on the right side of their defence - impressing then Rangers manager Walter Smith enough to earn a £2m move to Ibrox.

He scored on his Rangers debut in a 7-2 thrashing of Falkirk in the SPL on August 18, 2007, and went on to score 28 goals in nearly 200 games - including 11 in the 2009-10 season.

Whittaker’s time in Scotland, particularly with Rangers, has proved to be successful for the Edinburgh born defender. He has won three Scottish Premier League titles, two Scottish Cups, and three Scottish League Cups with the Gers, as well as another League Cup triumph with Hibernian in 2007.

The defender also appeared for Rangers in the 2008 UEFA Cup Final, which ended in a late 2-0 defeat to Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.

In the run up to the final, Whittaker scored a memorable goal against Sporting Lisbon in the quarters, picking up the ball in his own half and producing a wonderful finish to seal a semi-final place - one of many spectacular strikes in his time at Ibrox.
