Centre-back Michael Turner began his career at Charlton Athletic where he was captain of the reserve team, and was named Young Player of the Year in 2004.
The Lewisham-born defender was loaned out to Leyton Orient and Brentford before making his loan move to Griffin Park permanent where he established himself as one of the top centre-halves in the lower leagues.
He was voted Players’ Player of the Year in 2004-05 and Supporters’ Player of the Year in 2005–06.
In July 2006, after 110 appearances for Brentford, Turner joined Hull City and was in the side that won promotion to the Premier League following a play-off win in May 2008.
Turner scored 13 goals in 146 games for Hull and won the club’s Player of the Year award twice before moving to Sunderland in August 2009 on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
Turner made 77 appearances for Sunderland and featured 24 times in the Premier League in the 2011/12 season.
