Questions about Arsenal's use of a fourth substitute during extra-time against Norwich City look to have been answered easily enough.

The EFL is allowing a fourth player to be brought on as a substitute during extra-time on a trial basis in the Carabao Cup this season but the Gunners had only made two in normal time during their 2-1 win over Norwich on Tuesday.

The Canaries made all three of their changes before also bringing on Cameron Jerome, whereas Arsenal made two in extra-time.

However, this has already happened In the last round of the competition, with Bournemouth and Bristol Rovers both having made two changes during the added 30 minutes in the last round and Manchester City did likewise against Wolves last night.

Rule 10.2 of the Carabao Cup regulations simply states: “Where any match goes to extra time (in accordance with the provisions of Rules 14.4, 14.5 and/or 14.6), then subject to the League having obtained the prior approval of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to the application of this Rule, each Club participating in that match will be permitted to use an additional substitute (in extra time only).”

The trial is being led by Fifa and used in several competitions, including the Club World Cup, which means Arsenal are not facing any kind of reprimand for the use of their substitutes during the fourth round.
