Assist for Norwich City playmaker Wes Hoolahan during Republic of Ireland's friendly win over Uruguay
International duty continued for Norwich City star Wes Hoolahan last night as the Republic of Ireland secured an impressive 3-1 win over Uruguay in Dublin.
The playmaker came on at half-time with the score at 1-1 after a powerful opener from Stoke’s Jon Walters had been cancelled out by Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez.
Goals from Derby defender Cyrus Christie – teed up by Hoolahan just six minutes after coming on – and West Brom attacker James McClean sealed the victory, as Martin O’Neill’s side continued preparations for their home World Cup qualifier against Austria at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday (5pm).
Hoolahan also played in a 3-1 defeat to Mexico in the USA in the early hours of Friday morning, coming on in the 64th minute as the 35-year-old played his 38th match of the season.
The long-serving Canaries midfielder won his 39th cap in the win over Uruguay, ranked 10 places higher than Ireland at 16th in the world, with former Norwich team-mate Robbie Brady also playing the full match.
