Paul McVeigh, one of five players released by Norwich City yesterday, has landed a special award at Burnley - for scoring their goal of the season.

The 29-year-old forward, on loan at Turf Moor until the end of the season, collected the honour for his goal in the 2-0 win at home to Cardiff on Easter Monday.

Former Northern Ireland international McVeigh added his own commentary to the 14-pass goal when he took to the stage to receive the first prize of the night at the club's awards ceremony.

“I didn't really have to do much at all,” he admitted after seeing himself dart in front of his marker to get on the end of a cross from Wade Elliott to complete a move that involved nine out of the 10 outfield players in the build-up.

There was a Norwich connection to another Burnley award. Their 4-1 victory at Carrow Road in October, which signalled the end of Nigel Worthington's reign as manager, was voted performance of the season from a shortlist of five.
