Norwich City have confirmed the signing of Australian goalkeeper Michael Theoklitos on a two-year deal.

The 28-year-old becomes Bryan Gunn's fourth signing of the summer and joins City as a free agent after his contract expired with Hyundai A-League side Melbourne Victory.

Renowned for his no-nonsense presence as well as his consistently high level of performances, the City boss said he was thrilled to capture the stopper's signature.

“Michael has always been the number one target this summer, so obviously I'm delighted he's put pen to paper,” he said.

“Although other clubs were interested in trying to sign Michael he wanted to come and play for us and that is the kind of passion and commitment to Norwich City which I'm looking for in my players.

“Michael came for a few days with us in March and myself, Paul Crichton, and in fact everyone at Colney were very impressed with both his goalkeeping and also his personality. He will be a massive presence both on the pitch and in the dressing room.”

Theoklitos, who has been the subject of interest from a number of European clubs, told the Canaries website that City was always his first choice

“Norwich is a massive club with great crowds and it was always my first choice,” he said.

“The fact that in Bryan Gunn they have a manger who was a great goalkeeper himself was also a factor and although there is a big challenge ahead for the club, I'm really looking forward to being part of it.”

The goalkeeper's career has predominantly been in Australia, starting out with Victoria side Bulleen Inter Kings in 1998 and then with spells at Bulleen Zebras and South Melbourne before moving to New Zealand side Football Kingz in 2001.

Theoklitos made 20 appearances for the Kiwi club before moving to England and Bloomfield Road in 2002. But unfortunately injury restricted his appearances to just three games for Blackpool and he returned home to Australia and former club Bulleen Zebras.

Consistent performances for the Zebras that season culminated in the side reaching the final of the Victorian Premier League and saw three penalty saves by Theoklitos helping them to victory. His performances ultimately led to him joining Melbourne Victory for their inaugural season in the 2005-06 A-League.

During his time at Victory he established himself as one of the best keepers in the country - becoming 2007 Hyandai A-League Goalkeeper of the Year and playing an integral part in his side's Premiership and Grand Final success in 2008-09, keeping five clean sheets during the climax to that season. In total he made 72 appearances for the Melbourne Club.

Although selected by Australia on two occasions, he has yet to make an appearance for the Socceroos. With Greek ancestry he has also received interest from their national association but so far has only featured for Australia - his latest call-up was against Kuwait back in March, where he was an unused substitute.
