Norwich City fans will see a clutch of new Birmingham City signings on Saturday afternoon – but former Canaries centre-half Sebastien Bassong won’t be among them.

Bassong has been training with the Blues for the last few weeks and played for their Under-23s before the international break.

But Blues boss Harry Redknapp admitted he is still considering a move for the 31-year-old free agent, who was one of a clutch of players released by Norwich last summer.

Bassong did not travel with Birmingham’s development squad to Millwall on Friday morning - but Redknapp says he is still on his radar.

“I like Seb, the one area we are probably not overloaded – I have probably got three central defenders,” he said.

“That is an area, you do get suspensions and injuries with centre halves, that is just an area if maybe I was going to bring someone in he would be the ideal one.

“He is a great lad as well, I still think he’s a good player as well. He played Champions League for me at Tottenham. He was fantastic when I had him.

“He is still quick, still strong, so yes, he is a player we are looking at and still seeing where we go on that one.”

Redknapp has signed 13 new faces and made Craig Gardner’s loan permanent, in a hectic few months that saw a 28-player turnover.

The Blues broke their club transfer record to sign Jota from Brentford – for a fee eclipsing the £6m paid to Valencia for Nikola Zigic – and secured loan stars like Sam Gallagher and Jeremie Boga, from Southampton and Chelsea respectively. It’s a squad Redknapp believes can now provide an upturn in form after a start which has yielded only one win in five outings.

“Let’s see how we go, but I feel that there is a squad here now going forward that will give Birmingham as good a team as they’ve seen in a long time,” Redknapp said.

“I really believe that now looking at the group. There’s a good group of players here.

“The last signing from Everton, the lad Liam Walsh has come in and been excellent in training as well. He’s a smashing footballer. The whole group look good and ready to go.”
