Sky Sports punditry veteran Phil Thompson believes Norwich City 'allowed Burnley to overpower them' with a sloppy opening 20 minutes at Turf Moor.

The former Liverpool and England defender - speaking during his usual role on Soccer Saturday - felt the Canaries failed to adjust to the demands of a game against the Clarets, after receiving so much praise for their passing style following a superb 3-2 win over champions Manchester City the previous weekend.

"This was a game that everyone has been talking all week about Norwich City, the result of the weekend, but my goodness - what a difference a week makes," the 65-year-old said. "The first half, you're going to Burnley and they roll their sleeves up and absolutely overpower them.

"We saw how good it was last weekend (against Manchester City) when they were down near the corner flags and playing in little triangles to play up the pitch, it was all working and everyone was like 'oh my goodness'.

"But how many times did they give the ball away in the first 20 minutes? They just allowed Burnley to overpower them."

Asked what the big difference was between the two performances, Thompson pointed to Daniel Farke's players failing to summon the same motivation against Sean Dyche's direct and determined side.

He continued: "It's because everybody is focussed and you step up. This game, because of what happened last week, they're all supposed to be at it again - and as we know in the game, these are the games that you have to change and that mentality has to be different.

"They didn't and some of their passing was absolutely dreadful.

"In fairness to Burnley, they were absolutely terrific, they set about them, they were all over them, forcing them into errors."

Thompson, who won the European Cup three times as a Liverpool player, concluded: "The second half you could say Norwich came back into it, but that was because the levels had just dropped from the home team because they were 2-0 up.

"They had a couple of efforts, Leitner who came on for Tettey, another injury - the captain having to go off so they've got more problems - but Leitner did hit the post."
