Highly-rated centre back Akin Famewo has signed a new longer term Norwich City contract.

The 20-year-old has pledged his future to the Canaries until 2023 - rolling up an existing deal that was set to run until 2021 at Carrow Road.

Famewo has been part of the first team set up in recent weeks with Christoph Zimmermann, Grant Hanley and Timm Klose all ruled out through injury.

The development prospect was an unused substitute for the Premier League 5-1 home defeat to Aston Villa last month and was a regular in the club's EFL Trophy campaign.

"It's hard to describe how I'm feeling right now because there's a lot of excitement and good vibes," he told the club's official site. "It's been a big step up to working with the first-team because the intensity of the Premier League is a lot faster and stronger, but I feel like I'm learning and adapting to it.

"The first time I went into training with the first-team I was very excited. It's where I want to be, and it was just a good feeling. I'm excited to learn and develop.

"It's not as easy to boss people about now but no-one takes anything personally in games. It's all about helping each other out and playing as a unit.

"The aim is to play and eventually be involved in the first-team, so I'm taking good steps. I want to represent the club for as long as possible.

"My mum's side of the family are from Norwich so they're extremely happy and my dad's very proud as well."

Famewo followed the same path from Luton Town as the likes of fellow defenders Jamal Lewis and Max Aarons, and played in the same Hatters' youth setup as James Justin, who sealed a big money move to Leicester City last summer.

City chief Daniel Farke added Famewo is definitely one for the future.

"I'm delighted for Akin. He's developed a lot over the last period and his new deal is well deserved," he said, also on the club's official site. "Akin has recently stepped up to first team training and has adapted very well.

"We know he still needs time to develop, but he is very much on the right track. He's a good person and has a good presence and energy around him."
