Adam Idah and Josh Martin have been warned by Daniel Farke there are no short cuts to the Norwich City first team.

Farke has blooded both in a series of Premier League cameos since the restart, but resisted any temptation to start either.

The duo can expect Championship chances if they stay hungry and stay focused on what matters at Carrow Road.

“I am pretty strict with them and I can be harsh in training but when I think they are ready they will play,” said Farke. “I will protect them from any criticism or too much praise. They can’t let their standard drop.

“I don’t want them thinking about followers on Instagram or putting pictures on social media. That is not the real world. The real world is what you deliver on the pitch.

“If you throw them in at the wrong time the hype is unbelievably big. Adam had a fantastic performance at Preston (in the FA Cup) but it was on a Championship level and they had the second or third choice keeper playing, who made some bad mistakes.

“He has a bright future but after one performance don’t over-praise a young lad or put too much expectation on him.

“I have no doubt he is prepared to play on a top level. Josh Martin also looks sharp and can play on this level, but these are short term experiences when we introduce them at the end of a game right now.

“It is not 20 or 30 performances of an outstanding level.”

Norwich’s squad will be tested to the limit at Manchester City this weekend, in what is shaping up to be a daunting Premier League finale for the relegated Canaries.

“It is important we show character at Manchester City. It is not a Champions League final. It won’t change our season but we want to be there with a good last game, a spirited performance,” said Farke. “If I had to judge our defensive behaviour against Chelsea and Burnley, in terms of unity, in terms of discipline, in terms of being solid, I can only praise the lads.

“I want my players to show this at Manchester City to get the best result we can get.

“But the focus is already shifting to next season. It is always difficult to shake off relegation.

“History shows you it is tough to be spot on from the first game day, and even more difficult with a short pre-season.

“ But we won’t complain. That is the reality.”
