Daniel Farke has a two-point plan to get Norwich City firing on all cylinders in front of goal.
City’s head coach admits a quest for greater firepower remains his greatest challenge when the Canaries return to action next week after Saturday’s trip to Barnsley was postponed due to the Arctic snap that has gripped much of the country in recent days.
Farke pulled no punches yesterday in outlining what is holding Norwich back – and more importantly the solution.
“We don’t score enough goals to be higher up the table.
“Our goals-per-game is not good enough to be in the top position in the table,” he said.
“In the final third the ball has to go over the line and between the posts. It is as simple as that.
“To improve there is just two topics.
“One, to work with the players we have and we do that – in terms of the finishing and speaking about being brutal – but there is a difference doing it in training and in front of 30,000.
“When I look at the players we have they are not nearing 40 years of age. Josh Murphy, Todd Cantwell, Marley Watkins, even Nelson (Oliveira), they are very young and they can all improve.
“The other solution is to add this quality, and we have this in mind for the next transfer window. We are not naïve, we know this.”
Farke accepts financial constraints will limit City’s room to wheel and deal this summer.
“I would prefer to have a striker who has scored double figures in the Premier League or the Championship for the past seven seasons because that would mean a big guarantee of 20 goals a season,” he said.
“When the financial situation does not permit this you have to be creative.
“That will be our topic.
“Hopefully we can keep this squad and strengthen it, in terms of scoring goals, but there might be injuries, we might have to sell players - I hope not as many as in the previous two windows.
“If you have to sell key players it is not easy. Look at how many goals have left the club in the last two windows.
“It is tricky. I don’t think it is easy. I know this, so does Stuart (Webber) and the board.
“When you don’t have the best solutions then you must be smarter, more creative and quicker in the choices of recruitment that you make.”
