Reading boss José Gomes revealed the Royals have an option to buy Norwich City striker Nelson Oliveira in the summer.
Oliveira moved to the Canaries’ Championship rivals on loan in January, in a bid for regular football but has suffered an injury hit spell.
The Portugal international is currently on an intensive fitness programme to try and get back for the relegation run-in, but Reading chief Gomes indicated on Thursday he wants a longer stay for his compatriot.
Oliveira suffered an horrendous facial injury in a clash with Tyrone Mings at Villa Park that needed major reconstructive surgery before damaging his hamstring in a goalscoring win at Ipswich Town in early March.
“I would like Oliveira to stay with us next season,” said Gomes, speaking at his pre-match press call ahead of Saturday’s Championship home game against Alex Neil’s Preston. “I don’t know if that will be possible. He might have Premier League proposals. But we have an amount agreed with Norwich that we can buy him. Everybody would like to keep him. We have started planning for the summer. We are working on it.
“Oliveira is a really brave guy and is full of motivation to help us. He has had some unlucky moments in his career.
“If we followed the protocol he couldn’t play the rest of the season but with some friends and connections he found a way to give us hope he can help us during the season.
“He is trying so we will see what happens. He’s a very positive person and he believes he will be available. But he is also a bit crazy. He wants to play and to do everything possible to play.
“His spirit is really good so that’s why he tried everything to play again this season.”
Oliveira is due back in England on Thursday after linking up with Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG’s head physio Eduardo Santos to try and return before the end of the current campaign.
The 27-year-old, who is under contract at Carrow Road until 2020, was expected to be ruled out for the season after picking up a hamstring injury at Portman Road.
Oliveira had scored three goals in six appearances for his loan club, following a frustrating spell where he was down the pecking order under Norwich head coach Daniel Farke.
