Former Norwich City striker Chris Martin is targeting the Premier League after joining Championship rivals Bristol City.

The well-travelled frontman signed a two year deal with the option of a further 12 months after opting not to reject a proposed new contract at Derby.

The 31-year-old Scottish international notched 12 goals in 38 appearances for the Rams last season and has also featured in the second tier on loan Fulham, Reading and Hull.

“I have a real desire to come here and get promoted,” said Martin, in his first interview on the club’s site. “I do feel this is a club that matches that desire and ambition I have. Hopefully we can have many successful years together. It accelerated quite quickly over the last few days. Although I had heard about it before that.

“A bit of a whirlwind. I really enjoyed the first chat I had with the manager. The manager is big on getting a good group of people together who can all pull in the same direction and hopefully I can add to that.

“It is nice from my point of view to know a few of the guys to settle in a bit quicker.

“I am still extremely hungry. There is competition here for places. But that is something I have had throughout my career.

“I have thrived on that. You need a squad where everyone is being pushed. You look around the stadium and it is impressive.

“The playing surface is good and I am just looking forward to the point when the fans can return and get behind the team.”

Ex-Canaries’ academy product Martin was part of a double-promotion winning squad at Carrow Road under Paul Lambert during a seven-year spell.

City is scheduled to travel to Ashton Gate in the Championship on October 31 before hosting the Robins on January 20 2021.
