Onel Hernandez wants to be fit and firing if Norwich City’s Premier League and FA Cup bid does resume.

The Cuban faced a race to be back for the run in, after undergoing a second knee operation this season.

But the current shutdown while society tries to deal with the global pandemic gives Hernandez a shot at playing a bigger role, if the game’s powerbrokers decide they can finish the campaign.

The Premier League will not resume before May at the earliest, with further talks planned this week on a way forward.

“I feel very good. It means for me in this time we have off, if the season continues, I could be available for the last games we have,” said Hernandez, who made his last appearance at Newcastle on February 1.

“I can’t go (to the Colney training centre), because it’s a risk for the physios, everyone. The players undergoing rehab have to work from home.

“They gave us plans and we have to do most things from home or do stuff in the garden. I think we’re only allowed to be out of the house one time a day.

“At the moment for me, running isn’t really my focus, it’s more like to build my muscle back a little bit and put some weights on to see how my knee works. In the next week, that’s my focus before I start to run.

“Of course, we have to stay positive. We all miss the football, for sure, I don’t know what to do without football. It’s hard.

“I think sometimes in this situation, there’s other important things like family, grandparents, stuff like that who we have to be very careful about.”

Hernandez, speaking to the club’s official site, is also making the most of some extended family time with his partner and baby daughter.

“Everyday it’s a new smile, a new situation with her where she rolls around, I love it,” he said. “I get a lot of sleep, because she’s very good.

“Sometimes she had nights where she would wake up five, six, seven times but I’m very lucky because I don’t have to feed her.

“I try to support my fiancé as much as I can, it’s hard for her. She does very well. It’s a new time, because I spend a lot of time here.

“Before I didn’t have a lot of time, I was busy with training and stuff like that. I have a lot of time with them now, it’s lovely.”
