Norwich City have added to their growing crop of youth internationals by snapping up defender Mark O'Toole from Tottenham Hotspur.

The 16-year-old left back, who hails from the Republic of Ireland, was offered a scholarship after being deemed surplus to requirements at White Hart Lane - and will now be looking to make his mark with the Canaries' Academy.

O'Toole will be linking up with international colleague Michael Spillane and both youngsters represented the club with distinction when the Republic's Under-17 team took part in the Algarve tournament Portugal.

Spillane played a starring role as the Irish finished second overall, while O'Toole also did his cause no harm at all in the friendly event, which was being used as a warm-up for this summer's European Under-17 Championships.

Fellow Canary youngsters Andrew Cave-Brown and Joe Lewis were also on international duty last week. Defender Cave-Brown was part of the Scotland Under-19 squad that finished runners-up in a tournament in La Manga, Spain, while Lewis played for 45 minutes in England Under-19s' 3-0 victory over Slovakia in Northampton.

Academy manager Ricky Martin has received some positive feedback on all the youngsters and is now hoping to see them maintain their forward momentum, both with Norwich City and their respective countries.

“From an Academy point of view it helps put the club on the map by showing we have got a lot of talented boys here,” he said. “Playing international football can only be good for their development and now they have just got to keep working hard on their games with us. If they do that then hopefully further call-ups will follow.”
