Norwich City is ready to step up their pursuit of Ben Gibson, with the Canaries willing to thrash out a deal with Burnley for the centre back.

Gibson was linked with City and former club Middlesbrough in the Sunday gossip columns as he looks to end a frustrating spell at Premier League Burnley.

The 27-year-old has a wealth of Championship experience and has reportedly been training with the Teessiders where he started his career at the club owned by his uncle Steve Gibson.

But the Northern Echo report on Monday Norwich’s financial muscle has put them in pole position. City plan further talks in the days ahead and would be willing to explore a permanent or loan deal for the former England Under-21 international.

Boro only want to pay a proportion of Gibson’s £45,000 a week salary - quoted as in the region of £12,000 to £15,000. That would bring Gibson in line with the higher end of City’s own Championship wage structure.

Ben Godfrey has already been widely touted with a summer departure, and the likes of Christoph Zimmermann, Timm Klose and Grant Hanley all endured injury-hit seasons in the Premier League.

Norwich have already unveiled seven new signings since the end of the last season but head coach Daniel Farke is now in the market for some added experience ahead of the Championship return.

City’s current squad is due back at Colney next week with the Championship season set to begin on the weekend of September 12.
