Stade de Reims stopper Edouard Mendy is attracting interest from City and Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

Respected French sports media outlet, L'Equipe, claim on Tuesday afternoon the top flight duo have made contact with Reims to enquire about the 27-year-old Senegal international.

Mendy, who has three years left on his existing deal with his club, is currently at the African Cup of Nations and kept a clean sheet in Senegal's opening group game 2-0 win against Tanzania on Sunday.

The experienced number one kept 14 clean sheets in 38 Ligue One appearances last season to help Reims finish eighth in the French top flight.

L'Equipe report the signing of highly-rated keeper Predrag Rajkovic for 3m Euro raises doubts over Mendy's long term future with the club, and that Mendy is open to a new challenge.

A number of French outfits including Marseille, Rennes and Montpellier have been linked in recent weeks, along with the newly-promoted Premier League duo.

Norwich have been touted with a series of keepers during the summer window to provide competition for first choice Tim Krul, who signed a new longer term deal following Championship promotion along with back up Michael McGovern.

City did confirm the signing of teenager Archie Mair earlier in the day who will be part of the club's development set-up next season.

LIKELIHOOD: Hardly surprising the arrival of a new, younger keeper would prompt Mendy to question his future with Reims. Although his club are quoted in the French media saying they want him to fight it out for the number one spot after an impressive season at club level. A strong showing in the African Cup of Nations would do his transfer value no harm.

Given the length of his existing contract and the list of potential suitors, it looks unlikely Norwich would be able to compete with the type of financial package Aston Villa could offer, if there is tangible interest from England.

Tim Krul is Norwich's number one for the start of the new season. That is not going to change between now and the Premier League opener at Liverpool.
