Rangers' top brass have yet to make a final decision on whether Russell Martin will return to Ibrox next season.

Martin has made it clear he would be open to extending his stay in Glasgow after falling out of favour at Norwich City.

Rangers’ new boss Steven Gerrard has moved swiftly to complete his first signing with Scott Arfield agreeing a four-year deal from Premier League Burnley.

Rangers’ director of football, Mark Allen, also confirmed to the Daily Record there is a deal in place to turn Jamie Murphy’s loan from Brighton into a permanent deal but the futures of fellow loanees Martin, Jason Cummings and Sean Goss are up in the air.

“We’ll see, no final decisions have been made. We owe the courtesy to those players and their football clubs to speak with them first,” said Allen.

“But once that decision has been taken and made then you guys will get the nod.

“Yes, there is an agreement in principle to sign Jamie Murphy.

“But to get the opportunity to sign someone of Scott’s ability, stature, career and character is something that was a very easy thing for us to pursue. We’re delighted he’s joining us.

“We’ll see what the summer brings. What I can say is that the manager is fully conversant with this signing, as part of my conversations prior to him joining.

“He was made fully aware of the target players and was more than happy to endorse Scott. The signing comes with the manager’s blessing.”

Martin made 17 appearances for Rangers after joining the club in January but suffered two heavy Old Firm defeats in league and cup to Celtic.

The 32-year-old has a Carrow Road contract until at least 2019, after signing a new deal in July 2017, but only last month indicated he did not expect to feature under Daniel Farke next season.
