Norwich City prospect Simon Power has had to drop out of the Republic of Ireland U21 squad because of an injury.

The 20-year-old winger is currently on loan at Dordrecht but missed the Dutch second-tier club’s last game, a 3-2 home win over Roda JC, on Friday.

It’s since emerged that a calf injury will prevent the former UC Dublin attacker winning his first U21 cap on Sunday, when an U21 European Championship qualifier is being played against Luxembourg in Dublin.

Ireland U21s boss Stephen Kenny told the Irish Independent: “We scanned it and it is a grade one tear so he’ll be out for a while. We’re in discussions with Norwich.”

City U23 striker Adam Idah remains with the squad, fresh from winning the Men’s Under-17s Player of the Year award at the Football Association of Ireland’s International Awards on Sunday.

But dropping out comes as a blow for Power, who has a goal and an assist to his name from seven games since joining Dordrecht in January, starting twice.

The youngster won two caps at both U18 and U19 level for Ireland previously, having made his senior debut in the League of Ireland second tier for Cabinteely as a 17-year-old – speaking earlier this year about his U21 ambitions.

Posting on his Instagram account, Power said: “Gutted to be leaving camp early through injury for the European qualifier game this weekend.”

Elsewhere, international action for Canaries players could begin today, with Max Aarons in the England U19 squad ahead of a European Championship qualifier against Czech Republic, being played at 2pm at St George’s Park in Burton.
