Manager Paul Lambert was reported to be chasing the 25-year-old last month following Charlton's failure to emulate Norwich's instant Championship return.

Sam is officially out of contract later this week and Addicks' chief Phil Parkinson confirmed his versatile midfielder's representative is now in advanced talks with Championship clubs. The former England youth international insists he is even prepared to go out on trial to impress a potential new employer.

“That's a difficult one,” said Sam. “It depends what kind of club it is, it depends on the stature of the club. I would definitely go on trial though and back my ability. Probably my best attribute is setting up goals. Next season I hope to add a few more goals. I've played Premiership already and I've played two seasons in the Championship and one in League One. Obviously the aim is to move forward, so hopefully back in the Championship next season.

“It's not completely been ruled out me being at Charlton next season. Obviously it's heartbreaking to get that close and then lose in the play-off semi-final.”

Lambert has already drafted in three new midfield recruits but Sam's direct approach and pace in wide areas could be an attractive addition to the Scot's first team squad. City's Championship rivals Sheffield United, Leicester and QPR are also reportedly monitored the situation and Sam admits he wants his future sorted long before the new season kicks off.

“I'm accepting it and getting on with it I suppose,” he said. “I wouldn't say I'm out of contract right now, I've got prospects. I don't want it to sound like I'm out of contract and that's the end of it. Say it was in August and I was out of contract, it would be a lot worse.

“There are a lot of players out of contract, because obviously the money situation in football is not like it used to be. There are a lot of players and it's difficult.”

Charlton boss Parkinson has not given up hope of thrashing out a new deal for one of his most consistent performers last season. Sam made 47 appearances for the south London outfit and featured in both league games against the Canaries.

“We've got a lot of players out of contract and Lloyd is one of them but we will probably speak to him about it again this week,” said Parkinson. “Lloyd is looking at what is out there and his agent is talking to a few Championship clubs.”

Parkinson has also been linked with a move for former Norwich stalwart Gary Doherty. The Charlton boss is in the close in the close season market for more experience at the back after missing out in the play-offs to Swindon.

“I've been extremely busy talking to various targets and their representatives but we haven't been able to do anything yet because the budget is still a bit up in the air,” he said. “It still needs to be clarified first before we can take those calls to the next step. At the moment I don't have the ability to get those deals done but hopefully I will soon. The situation as we stand is that we haven't got enough players signed up and we need to add to the squad.”
