Norwich City could be about to try their luck in the loan market again, with talks about a possible season-long loan for defender Ethan Ampadu reportedly under way with Chelsea.
The 19-year-old spent last season on loan at Bundesliga side RB Leipzig - but made only three appearances in the league for Julian Nagelsmann’s side.
The centre-back did feature on three occasions for the German side in the Champions League but a back injury prevented him from making an impact at the Red Bull Arena following the resumption of the league after the enforced suspension caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Press Association report that the Canaries want to sign Ampadu as they continue their preparations for the upcoming Championship campaign.
City face competition from newly-promoted Fulham for the Welsh internationals services and the Cottagers are in pole position to sign the defensive midfielder.
The Wales international is also capable of playing as a defensive midfielder and the Canaries are keen to bolster their defensive options during this window.
Ampadu’s arrival would do little to quash rumours of a potential departure for City central defender Ben Godfrey, who has been linked with clubs including AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen since relegation was confirmed.
Ampadu has played 12 times for Chelsea but is yet to make a Premier League breakthrough, with his one substitute appearance coming against Huddersfield Town almost three years ago.
The youngster has featured 13 times for the Welsh national team and was also the youngest ever player to appear for Exeter City’s first team, aged 15 - but turned down a professional deal. Chelsea were ordered to pay £850,000 with a series of add-on fees by a tribunal.
The report also backs up suggestions that Norwich are keen to add Burnley defender Ben Gibson to their ranks ahead of the new season - but they face competition from Middlesbrough and other clubs.
City have made six additions to their side since the end of last season, with Kieran Dowell, Przemyslaw Placheta, Jacob Sorensen and Bali Mumba all arriving as first-team options.
Last season’s loan signings of Patrick Roberts, Ralf Fahrmann, Ibrahim Amadou and Ondrej Duda proved unsuccessful but Angus Gunn was a success in the Championship while on loan from Manchester City during Daniel Farke’s first season in charge.
