New signing Mark Fotheringham insisted he had no concerns over his match fitness as he and fellow Scot Simon Lappin made a winning start to their Norwich City careers.

The two deadline day signings played their part in the 2-1 home win over Leeds - and manager Peter Grant said they “brought a lot of quality to the team” with their debut performances.

Said Fotheringham: “We're two confident lads, so it's just great to get in among the lads and get our first game under our belts.

“I haven't played since the start of December so that was my first game for a while, which was really pleasing.”

Despite his lack of matches, the 23-year-old midfielder said he had kept in good shape.

“I really look after myself in terms of fitness and it was great to get the full 90 minutes under my belt. It was a great result as well and there were some good quality players out there.”

Fotheringham said he was “in shock” that City trailed 1-0 at half-time, but later started the move that led to Darren Huckerby's winning goal.

Grant said of his new recruits: “I was delighted with them. I thought they brought a lot of quality to the team, especially Simon Lappin, who started the game exceptionally well and had an excellent first half.

“I thought Fozzy got caught up in the midfield, being too tight together in the first half, but once the game expanded and he played in more space, I thought you saw his quality. His first touch was excellent, he can play with good players, he can see a pass.

“The two boys should be chuffed with themselves. And I think we've got to give the squad great credit because they've made them feel welcome. They only trained with us Thursday morning and to push them into that was a big ask.

“I thought they both acquitted themselves very, very well and hopefully they'll continue to improve once they get fitter and fitter.

“There is no doubt the Championship is a completely different league to where Simon's been playing in the Premier League in Scotland and Fozzy has been in Switzerland, which is a different type of football as well, but I think at times he showed that quality that we've probably been lacking.”
