A grim season that ended in relegation for Norwich City was watched by crowds reaching very nearly one million.

Attendances for the Canaries' 49 matches in all competitions in 2008-09 totalled 998,394.

Once again Carrow Road was packed with 564,483 spectators watching their 23 home Championship fixtures at an average of 24,542, the third highest in the division below Derby with 29,440 and Sheffield United with 26,023.

It is remarkable that City's average home gate was better than champions Wolves and more than 5,000 higher than runners-up Birmingham, both looking forward to Premier League football while Bryan Gunn's men prepare for life in League One.

Highest home crowd of the season was 25,487 for the Easter Monday visit of Watford, but the biggest gate home or away was the 28,274 at Ipswich six days later.

The only four-figure gate for a Championship match involving Norwich was 7,505 at Blackpool in March.

Goalkeeper David Marshall was the only ever-present player for the second season running, making 49 appearances, and has now played 100 consecutive games for the club.

Player of the season Lee Croft was next on the appearances chart with 44 outings in all competitions.

City once again had a huge turnover of players with 33 appearing for the first team, 15 of them on loan.

One of those loan recruits, Reading striker Leroy Lita, finished as top scorer with seven goals, with midfielder Sammy Clingan second on six - the same total as own goals - and Croft and Arturo Lupoli on five each.

City collected five red cards, two of them for Darel Russell, with Gary Doherty, John Kennedy and Dejan Stefanovic also sent off. Doherty had a second red card overturned after referee Andy D'Urso controversially dismissed him in the home game against Bristol City.
