The Norwich City fan involved in an angry confrontation with midfielder Andy Hughes says he just wants the incident to be forgotten.

But the Norwich City Independent Supporters' Association has issued a statement calling on the player to be sacked by the club for his behaviour.

Police have launched an investigation after the 28-year-old Canaries midfielder ran over to the City Stand to remonstrate with Keith Saunders, 38, who had shouted at him.

There was a tussle and Hughes could be heard shouting, “I'm going to take your f*****g head off” before being dragged into the changing room by goalkeeper Paul Gallacher and other club officials.

Mr Saunders said today he stood by his comments but hoped the matter would not be pursued any further.

The city supporter of 30 years, said: “I shouted to Hughes that he was the worst player I had ever seen and he was not fit to wear the shirt, but I did not swear at him, and suddenly he started coming towards me and the rest is a bit of a blur.

“I don't regret saying what I said because I don't think he is a good footballer, but I think it has all been blown out of proportion.”

Geoff Maddison, also of Great Yarmouth, who sits next to Mr Saunders, was pictured being interviewed by police after the incident. He said: “At the end of the day footballers are only human too. They should be able to ignore things like this but these things happen.”

Both men said they were expecting calls from police, who are looking into the matter.

Meanwhile, NCISA issued a statement calling for Hughes to be sacked.

It said: “To see a player of this club, our club, be restrained by stewards and players … is nothing short of disgraceful and wholly unacceptable.

“The player has the same future at this club as the manager. The board have to take a stance.”
