'These celebrations are unbelievable' - Former Canaries duo making the most of success at Wolves
John Ruddy and Ryan Bennett are going to enjoy every moment of helping Wolves seal promotion to the Premier League.
Just over a year ago it was announced that the duo would not be getting new contracts at Norwich City but have bounced back in style.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s team saw their promotion sealed on Saturday night when Brentford scored a late equaliser against Fulham, before celebrating with a 2-0 home win over Birmingham on Sunday.
“It was a surreal feeling, being promoted but knowing that we had to get ready for a game,” former Canaries keeper Ruddy said. “We’ll have a good celebration now and then look forward to hopefully finishing the season off well and making sure we’re champions.”
The 31-year-old has played all 43 of Wolves’ matches this season, keeping a league-high 22 clean sheets, to add to his 2011 Championship promotion with Norwich.
“It’s really special,” added Ruddy, who made 243 appearances for City. “I said when I joined the club that I was joining because it matched the ambition that I had, which was to get back into the Premier League, and we’ve achieved that.
“I’ve done it before, but occasions like this get better every single time, and we’re going to enjoy this one.”
Centre-back Bennett eventually established himself as a regular and has made 33 appearances, scoring one goal, a vital late winner in a 2-1 win at Bristol City in December. The former Peterborough defender made 119 appearances for Norwich across five seasons.
“It’s unbelievable,” Bennett continued, speaking to Wolves’ official website. “Obviously we knew, but we wanted to put a show on and make sure we beat Birmingham, because ultimately we want to win the league, and today’s results is a big step towards it, so hopefully we can carry on next week and continues towards that.
“These celebrations are unbelievable and we’ll continue to enjoy this for the rest of the season. It’s great to have the families out here – great for them and great for all the lads. We’ll make sure we enjoy it together as a family, as a team and as a club.”
