A former Norwich City academy striker was on the score-sheet as Newport County knocked a second Championship side of the season out of the League Cup.

Tristan Abrahams opened the scoring in the 18th minute of Tuesday night’s 3-1 home win over Watford, sending goalkeeper Daniel Bachman the wrong way from the penalty spot.

The 21-year-old was restored to County’s starting XI after featuring as a substitute during a 2-1 home win over Barrow on Saturday and played the full game - with the Hornets making 10 changes to their team after a 0-0 league draw at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

The South Wales side will host Morecambe or Newcastle United in the fourth round next week, having also knocked out Swansea in the first round, with Abrahams scoring both of the goals during a 2-0 home win over their Welsh rivals earlier this month.

Norwich signed the forward in 2017 after he had scored a couple of League Two goals for Leyton Orient as a teen and he was a regular at under-23 level during his first season, scoring nine goals in 27 games.

He spent the following season on loan in League Two with Exeter City and Yeovil Town and scored a total of five goals in 38 games during 2018-19 but was released by City at the end of his contract.

He scored 10 goals in 46 games in all competitions during his first season with Newport and has enjoyed a bright start to this season.
