One of Paul Gallacher's former managers backed the City stopper to revel in his chance to become the Canaries' undisputed number one - and then make a quick return to the Scotland team.

Alex Smith was manager at Dundee United when Gallacher made his breakthrough and was rewarded with a string of fine displays that earned the 'keeper the first of his eight caps.

The 66-year-old, who now scouts for Scotland manager Walter Smith, also described Gallacher as one of the best young keepers he has ever seen.

“It surprised me when he went to Norwich but he took up the challenge and went, but had to take a backseat and that will make him stronger,” Smith said. “Since then Scotland have got a good crop of young goalkeepers including Craig Gordon of Hearts, David Marshall at Celtic Park and young Iain Turner at Everton.

“But Paul was in before them and that should stand him in good stead. He will get a recall at some stage I'm sure.

“Walter is aware of his situation. Paul will revel in it and his experiences will certainly act to make him stronger.

“He is one of the best fielders and shot stoppers of the ball I've seen and has handling of the back pass is excellent.”

And Smith, who was awarded the MBE last year for services to Scottish football and is one of only two managers to lead two teams to Scottish Cup success in St Mirren and Aberdeen, had a message for City fans that have not seen much of Gallacher in action.

“I would just say look forward to seeing an excellent goalkeeper,” he said.
