Norwich City boss Paul Lambert has been linked with an audacious move for Greece's European Championship-winning striker Angelos Charisteas.

Respected Germany newspaper Bild claimed the 30-year-old Nuremberg frontman has been offered a trial with the Canaries after falling out of favour with his Bundesliga club.

Norwich boss Lambert bolstered his strike force with the summer addition of Simeon Jackson from Gillingham but the 6ft 3in Greek could be another option with Grant Holt (thigh) struggling to be fit for the Championship kick-off.

Charisteas was part of his country's World Cup squad in South Africa but only featured in one pool game at the global tournament. The striker shot to fame with Greece's winner against hosts Portugal to lift the 2004 European Championship title.

Charisteas has played for top continental clubs Ajax, Feyenoord and Werder Bremen before moving to Nuremberg in 2007.

The German club are reportedly willing to offload their highest earner after last season's disappointing campaign which saw them forced to win a play-off to secure their Bundesliga status after finishing a lowly 16th.

Charisteas had been linked with Scottish Premier League champions Rangers earlier this summer as a potential replacement for Kris Boyd. Ex-Gers' scout Ewan Chester has since moved to Carrow Road from Ibrox to head up City's scouting network whilst Lambert enjoyed a hugely successful playing spell in Germany.

The Scot won the Uefa Champions League with Borussia Dortmund and returned to Germany to begin his coaching career by studying for his Uefa badges while finishing his playing days at Celtic.

City skipper Holt has yet to feature in any of the Canaries friendlies since the opening pre-season stroll at Ridgeons neighbours Dereham. Holt again had to settle for a watching brief from the stands in the midweek goalless draw against League Two Lincoln - although Lambert hinted afterwards the striker was winning his fitness battle.

Charisteas came close to joining East Anglian rivals Ipswich Town in the summer of 2008 when Jim Magilton was manager at Portman Road but decided he didn't want to join a club in the second tier of English football. Two years on and with Nuremburg eager to get him off their wage bill, he may have changed his tune.
