The Canaries may head to Plymouth on Saturday with a big question mark hanging over the future of England 'keeper Robert Green.

The 25-year-old City No 1 was widely linked to a £2 million switch to Portsmouth yesterday - a move that would grant him a Premiership stage on which to showcase his England World Cup claims.

City boss Nigel Worthington today admitted he had spoken to both Green and his agent, Andy Evans.

Worthington said: “Robert's agent has spoken to me on the situation and his agent is simply trying to do his job for his player.

“Portsmouth has been mentioned but once again we've heard nothing from the football club.

“I have spoken to Robert - what was said is between Robert and I.

“At the moment there are no offers on the table that excite Norwich City as regards any player.”

The heat was turned up last night when agent Evans said Green would welcome a move back to the top flight.

Evans is clearly hoping agreement can be reached before the end of the January transfer window.

“We are aware and flattered by Portsmouth's interest and so are Norwich,” he told Sky Sports last night.

“If the two clubs can agree a fee we would be happy to talk and explore a move back to the Premiership.

“Robert still has very big England ambitions and wants to play at the highest level.”

Green, whose current contract expires at the end of next season, has emerged as one of the top goalkeepers in England since making his debut for the Canaries against local rivals Ipswich towards the end of the 1998-99 season.
