New Republic of Ireland boss Stephen Kenny handed teenager Adam Idah a senior international debut in Bulgaria in his first match at the helm.

The 19-year-old striker was called up for Ireland’s senior squad after catching the attentions of Kenny from his time in charge of the U21s.

Idah was selected ahead of seasoned operator Shane Long as Kenny sought to inject pace and youthful endeavour into Ireland’s attacking play.

The Irish youth striker burst onto the domestic scene in dramatic fashion when he bagged a hat-trick in the FA Cup third-round against Preston North End in February.

“Adam Idah at Norwich is developing really well.

“He’s our most prolific goalscorer at youth level for Ireland throughout all the age groups so he’s been waiting for this opportunity and now he deservedly comes into the squad,” Kenny explained to Sky Sports.

“He can play with his back to goal. There are not many strikers who can do that, and are also very quick. He has all the attributes to be a very good striker.”

Elsewhere, City striker Teemu Pukki starts for Finland in their fixture against Wales tonight.
