Jonny Howson ran the show at Carrow Road - and for once, he was happy to enjoy a game where everything came off.
After a recurrence of an ankle injury ended Howson’s afternoon early the previous weekend as Norwich City suffered a desperate defeat at Rotherham, the midfielder returned earlier than many feared and with more style than most dared hope.
Saturday’s win over a Wolves side now managed by the man who brought Howson to Carrow Road, was played in front of supporters still keen to voice their displeasure at their club’s flailing promotion bid.
But they still appreciated Howson’s all-action display, while the man himself was just happy to enjoy a better day in yellow and green.
“Sometimes you get games where you try things and it just seems to happen and it comes off,” said Howson, whose left-footed pile-driver smashed the crossbar before Steven Naismith opened the scoring. Howson’s volley for his second and City’s third late on sealed all three points.
“Another day you try something and think, what on earth? I’ve tried similar in the past and it’s ended up in row Z. That’s how it goes, you have your ups and downs.
“That was possibly my best performance of the season so far, but it’s not about me personally. Yes OK, sometimes you can focus on yourself and try to get that right. But the most pleasing thing is the all-round team performance.”
Howson added: “It was very good to be back. It was disappointing it was the ankle I had the operation on – something just wasn’t right last Saturday. So thanks to the medical and sports science teams to get me right for this one. It’s strange because it had probably been the best it had felt leading up to that. So to have a minor set-back, it’s just frustrating and disappointing when you want to get a run of games and find a bit of your own personal form.
“There have been a few cases this season where it’s knocked me back. But we managed to get it right and there was no major issue there.”
