Sunderland boss Roy Keane wants Carrow Road victory to trigger a Championship promotion push.

Keane is desperate to arrest a recent decline of four defeats in his last five matches that leave the Wearsiders mired in mid table.

"We need to try and put a run together," he said. "If you do before you know it you're up there. It's very frustrating for all managers in this division because inconsistency seems to be the order of the day. It's not just Sunderland, it's lots of teams - Norwich City are just like ourselves.

"They've got a few good results but then a few bad ones. We played Cardiff midweek and came into the game off the back of a couple of good wins thinking we might get our third and really start to make an impact.

"We're all disappointed because we thought we had an opportunity on the night that we didn't take. I have told my players that we've got to look for consistency. We weren't outplayed, we just gave away a couple of bad goals.

"A lot of teams win a couple and then lose, you can't put your finger on it. If you want to go on as a football club that is no good to you."

Keane aims to gatecrash the play-off picture ahead of the January transfer window.

"We want to get as near to the top six as we can and then come January get one or two players in and kick on," he said. "That's the aim. It's never easy getting them in. Hopefully they'll fancy coming here, but the kind of players I'm looking at probably have other clubs interested. The further we get up the table, the better chance we'll have of getting them."
