New signing Teemu Pukki's performance impressed head coach Daniel Farke as Norwich City got their pre-season fixtures under way with a 2-1 win at King's Lynn Town.

The Canaries needed younger legs to come on and win them the game though, as Toby Hilliard had put the Linnets ahead early in the second half, only for under-23 starlets Devonte Aransibia and Adam Idah to win the game for the visitors.

After the game Farke calmed talk of a loan move being imminent for Sheffield Wednesday striker Jordan Rhodes – and revealed some worrying injury news – as the Sheffield Star reported that talks with the Owls striker had collapsed.

“I won’t comment on any rumours or speculation,” City’s boss said of the Rhodes reports. “In general there are many players we are linked with, some of them were right and some were not, so I don’t think it helps if I comment on any names.

“All i can say is I’m pretty pleased with our squad so far but we won’t fall asleep and will be awake if there are some opportunities and with our financial situations, we are looking to strengthen the squad, 100 percent.”

Pukki’s lively 45 minutes pleased the German coach though, as the Finland international made his pre-season debut at The Walks.

“You could see that he had some smart movements and he was pretty close on two or three times to score a goal, he is also an experienced player, wherever he played he was also able to be there with goals and assists,” Farke added.

“I think you could also see that he was not really fresh as normally he is a really quick player but you got the feeling that sometimes, okay his legs were a bit heavy, but we have to prepare him for the season and not the pre-season.”

However, midfielder Mario Vrancic may be out until the end of August and is set to see a specialist about a cartilage issue in the pelvis area.

“There are a few topics that we are a bit concerned, firstly Mario Vrancic with an injury from before the break,” Farke explained. “Two years ago he had cartilage damage (in the pelvis area) and it could be that has to have some injections which means he is out until the end of August, that would be really bad news for us because he played a really good part, especially in our second half of last season, so we send him to the doctors in London to get a different view on it.”

New arrival Emi Buendia (calf) is likely to join in the games during the tour of Germany from the end of next week, although right-back Ivo Pinto will miss that tour with a hamstring issue. Long-term injury victim Matt Jarvis is not in training as his troubles continue but Louis Thompson is making good progress.

City’s boss was relieved to see the fresh legs of his young players ensured pre-season started with a victory for the first team.

“A first win, that’s always important!” Farke said with a smile. “We always knew it was going to be difficult because the lads were tired, we just travelled with a small group of first team players and you could see on the pitch there were some problems with concentration and mistakes.

“We decided to bring the young lads and compliment to Matt Gill and his squad, you can see how important it is when you are fresh and highly motivated for the game like our opponent was.

“In general for several lads they are not prepared for pre-season because they joined us late or issues in terms of injuries so we didn’t take any risks, plus young lads and I think this is good to show them that with good performances they have a chance for a position in the first team and some of them were really good.”
