David Marshall has set his sights on becoming Scotland number one after completing his move from Norwich City to Cardiff.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper has signed a four-year deal with the Bluebirds and will challenge Peter Enckelman for a starting place in the Welsh capital.

But it is a place in the Scotland side which Marshall most covets.

“I want to play regularly and challenge Craig Gordon to be Scotland's number one,” said Marshall.

Marshall has been very much third-choice for Scotland since making his international debut, winning two caps in 2004.

But Allan McGregor's lifetime ban has seen him move into the position of Craig Gordon's understudy.

He kept a clean sheet in the B international against Northern Ireland last week and one reason for leaving relegated Norwich was to safeguard his international career.

“I'm happy to join Cardiff and it wasn't a hard decision to make,” he said. “It will be better for me playing at the top end of the Championship.”

He told BBC Sport: “I've signed with a view to being number one. I played every game last season for Norwich and have been a regular for the last few years.

“I expect to work hard ready for the start of the season and prove I'm there to be the number one.

“I'm desperate to be in the team, I wouldn't have signed otherwise.

“I've had the chance to be a number two to someone a few times but I want to play games.”

One national newspaper has claimed that Cardiff are preparing a second Carrow Road raid for midfielder Sammy Clingan, but sources close to the Welsh club suggest the report is unfounded.

However, Clingan is a prime candidate to move on in the summer after being the subject of an offer from Premier League club Fulham in January.
