Matt Gill has been confirmed as Norwich City’s permanent under-23s manager for the new season.

The former Canaries midfielder took on the role on an interim basis for the closing months of the last campaign, overseeing 12 matches alongside academy manager Richard Money.

That followed the exit of Dmitri Halajko, who left to become head of technical coaching at Leicester City’s academy in February.

The 36-year-old, who made 16 appearances as a City player and was part of the League One title winning team in 2010, took up the reins and led the young Canaries to the semi-finals of the Premier League Cup and Premier League International Cup.

“I really enjoyed the experience of last season so I’m really chuffed,” said Gill.

“I worked with various age groups last year which gives me a really good knowledge of all the boys. It’s a great job for myself, being my hometown club, so I’m looking forward to getting stuck in.”

Gill won five and lost five of his 12 games in charge and wasn’t able to haul the U23s away from the bottom of Division Two of Premier League Two, with the highlights coming in a 5-0 thrashing of Wolves in the PL Cup at Colney and a 6-0 demolition of Dinamo Zagreb II at Carrow Road in the PLI Cup.

Academy manager Money, speaking to Norwich City TV, added: “Matt has a good way with the players and he’s proven to be a very adept coach.

“Wherever you can, whenever possible, you need to try to promote from within. He did a really good job in the interim period last year and we’re looking forward to what he can do in the coming season.”
